General Information

Working in the UK

If you are coming to the UK as a full time student on a course lasting more than 6 months then you will normally be entitled to work during your studies (providing you receive the correct immigration status).

However, although you may be entitled to work while you study, it would be unwise to really on potential income from work to fund your studies in the UK. Most students from outside the European Economic Area will only be able to work for up to 20 hours each week during term times and you are unlikely to be able to earn enough to meet all your costs in London. Also, the immigration rules actually require you to be able to show that you can meet the costs of study without having to rely on income from work.

For more information on your rights to work in the UK please see the UKCOSA guidance note 'working during your studies''. These rules do not apply to residents of the European Economic Area who should see the guidance note 'EEA students' instead.

The Department for Education and Skills also produces a leaflet explaining the rights of international students to work in the UK. This leaflet can be accessed by clicking here.

If you looking for work in London then the University of London Careers Service has a good website where you can search for jobs. You do not have to be a student of the University to search and can access the site here.
